Types of Mulch

There are many different types of mulch available. The two main types are organic and dyed mulch. Organic mulches decompose in the landscape which improves the soil quality and provide nutrients for plants. The only downfall is that you must replenish them since they decompose. We carry double ground organic mulch which is the normal standard size of mulch. We also carry triple ground organic mulch which is finer and should be used for newly planted trees and plants or new landscapes because it breaks down faster and allows the nutrients to be available sooner and helps amends the soil.

The dyed mulches come in many different colors. We carry dyed brown and dyed red mulch. The biggest benefit of a dyed mulch is that it will hold it’s color longer than the organic mulch. The dyed mulches do not decompose and don’t need to be replaced as often but you may have to remove some of it if it gets too deep. Dyed mulches also do not improve soil structure nor add organic materials or provide nutrients for plants.

We also carry woodchips that are great for paths or walkways. Remember the woodchips may have sticks or leaves and are chunks of wood. We recommend going with an organic mulch. Dyed mulches should only be used for decorating purposes.

Proper Mulching Techniques
Mulch Techniques

Mulch is used to place over the soil surface to maintain moisture & temperature, improve soil conditions, minimize weeds and reduce damage from weed whackers. Mulching is the most beneficial thing a home owner can do for the health of a tree. Rake or till old mulch to break up any matted layers before applying new mulch.

Mulch must be applied properly; we recommend that 3 - 4 in. of mulch be applied. Pull the mulch away from stems or tree trunks several inches so the base of the trunk is exposed. Place mulch out to the drip line of the tree or beyond. Remember: If the tree had a say in the matter, its entire root system (which extends well beyond the drip line) would be mulched. Be sure to use our mulch calculator to find out how much mulch you need.

How to mulch properly

If mulch is applied too deep or if the wrong material is used, it can actually be harmful to trees and other landscape plants. Mulch piled up around the base of the tree looks similar to a volcano. Piling mulch against the trunk or stems of plants may lead to insect and disease problems. Deep mulch can lead to excess moisture which can stress the plant and cause root rot.

General questions about mulch.

Does organic mulch attract bugs?

The mulch will not attract any more bugs or insects than would normally be there.

Does mulch attract termites?

No because termites are only attracted to wood that is below the earth’s surface. Since mulch is used above ground it does not attract them.

Is mulch treated with any chemicals?

No, we do not treat mulch with any chemicals. Mulch is organic.

Is mulch treated with a fire retardant?

In very dry weather we recommend that when you water your plants you also water down your mulch. This will help prevent a potential fire hazard and hold moisture in plants.

How many yards your truck may hold?

A standard size 6 ft. bed holds up to 1 1/2 yards , and an 8 ft. Bed holds up to 2 yards all without a toolbox.

Is mold on mulch harmful?

No, because when it gets very hot and humid a fungus sometimes grows on top of mulch. It can easily be removed by hitting it with a hoe or with a blast of water from a hose. This fungus is not harmful.
